DAWN
Deaf Abused Women's Network

The Network Advocate Program (NAP) Volunteer Network Advocates (NAs) who are Deaf and  fluent in American Sign Language dedicate their time for one year to work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Hearing volunteers who are fluent in American Sign Language may also serve as Advocates.

After applying and completing 40 hours of Deaf-based domestic violence and sexual assault training, Advocates work directly with survivors to review resources and options, accompany survivors to courthouses, hospitals and other appointments as requested, and operate the 24-Hour TTY Hotline in rotating shifts.

If you are interested you can apply to be a Network Advocate. Contact us to request a NAP Application. We’ll set up an interview to meet you and introduce you to DAWN.

Network Advocate Training

Network Advocate Training is offered once a year.  It is an intensive 40 hour training program usually scheduled for weekends and evenings during the week.  The program includes in-depth information on domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, and on how these are experienced in the Deaf community.  Information about the rights of persons who experience domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking includes resources for addressing these issues.  The systems that a person may be involved in are also explained-- for example, the criminal justice system, the courts, the police and health systems.

Due to our changes at the office, our NAP training is postponed until Spring of 2008.
